New Neighbors

We found these new neighbors in our grill that is sitting on the side of our house. The grill belongs to the home owners and it really needs to be thrown away. We'll have to wait until these cute blue eggs are no longer residing in it.
The kids have enjoyed looking at the eggs, almost daily. On Saturday we noticed that one of the eggs has been changing. The kid thought that someone had come and started to peel the eggs. I explained to them that the bird is probably trying to make its way out of the egg.
We also have a Kildeer living in our backyard. This bird sits on 4 eggs and has been almost daily for the past week. Talk about dedication. It's been windy and rainy all week and that momma bird stays put. That is until one of us silly humans come and worry her.
Justin explained to all of us how Kildeers work. The bird protecting the eggs will run away from the nest and pretend it has a broken/hurt wing. It lies on the ground flapping it's wing in an odd sort of way. It chirps and tries to lure you over to it -away from the nest- and then stands up and goes farther from the nest. It then lies back down and fakes an injury again.
Since hearing all of that, we all make it a point to walk toward the nest just to see the bird put on a show for us. We don't touch the eggs though. We understand that the eggs will not be cared for if a human touches them.
It's been fun to have so many birds in our yard. Since we don't have any grass- just lots of weeds in the back- I think the birds have thought that it's some wildlife refuge for them. Now that I've washed my windows, I could spend hours just soaking up the sun and watching the birds out my windows!
